Greetings everyone!
Report on the COPAMA April 12, 2005 Meeting
at Lane Aviation, 5:30
Opening:
Lowell Dowler opened the meeting with recognition of all our
sponsors and students who were attending from Columbus State with
Terry Huff. Jeff Gruber updated us on the progress of this year’s
golf outing. More on that at the next meeting. Lowell introduced
Bill Ward, the featured speaker of the evening.
Presentation:
Tonight's meeting was co-sponsored by T&W Electrical Services.
Mr. Ward began his presentation of “Starters,
Alternators and Generators, How to Make Them Last” with a history
of generators and alternators, parts and regulation systems.
Bill spoke of products, by manufacturer name,
and explained why, in his experience, they were more or less
reliable. Some factors mentioned were such as use of automotive
quality instead of aircraft quality parts, vibration and other
factors.
He spoke of how propeller balance affects the
performance of alternators, oscilloscope patterns, brush, rotor
shaft and gear wear. He gave troubleshooting tips on various
systems. Bill also provided a comprehensive look at the differences
in standard and “light weight” starters. The presentation was
indeed helpful to many people who must deal with these problems on a
daily basis. We thank him for a fine meeting.
Notable People:
We would like to recognize Terry Huff for his
constant effort in trying to introduce new people to the industry
and our organization. We welcome Brandon Key, Sean Wise, Leroy
Birkhold, John Holland, Josh Kotal? and Stacey Murrell (Josh’s
guest) to the meeting. For some of you who are new members, please
get with me to assure I have your correct e-mail address.
ALSO! I would like to give special recognition
to two very notable people.
1)
Robert Gillespie, a prime example of one of
Columbus State’s alumni who is serving our industry with
distinction. Robert works for Chautauqua Airlines as a mechanic and
electronic technician. We are very proud of Bob!
2)
Jerry Peer: I felt honored and privileged to
greet Jerry at tonight’s meeting. I have known Jerry for over 40
years and can assure you that he is one of the politest, kindest,
skilled and professional technicians and pilots this industry has
known. Keep your eye on this man folks. In my opinion, he is one of
the upcoming and most deserving candidates for the Charles Taylor
Master Mechanic Awards.
Finally, REMEMBER, the May 10, 2005 meeting at
Lane Aviation.
Dallas
Airmotive will be sponsoring the meeting. Brian Harrington will be
doing a presentation on TFE 731 engines.
